Production of Bio-Phosphate from MBM: absolutely not, there is no any technical reason and economical viability, possibility and rationality to convert high protein low P content MBM to Bio-Phosphate. MBM can be rationally utilized for bioenergy via pyroylsis processing.

MBM - meat and bone meal mix is made by “rendering” of categories 1 and 2 animal by-product (ABP) materials by processing at 133°C at 3 bars pressure for at least 20 minutes, to ensure partial sanitization (this is considered to be sufficient to eliminate bacteria and viruses but not prions, which prion elimination require processing temperature treatment over 500°C material core) . The rendered product typically contains about 48–52% high protein content, 33–35% ash, 8–12% fat, and 7-10% moisture. The MBM rendering process produces energy or the products are taken in energy-production installations authorized to take these categories of animal by products for energy conversion. Meat and Bone Meal Ash is produced by high temperature incineration/calcination treatment of MBM in a heat process conform to the Industrial Emissions Directive (2010/75/EU Incineration Directive) Article 6 = conditions of incineration at minimum 850°C for at least 2 seconds, TOC (total organic carbon) in ash powder <3%. These conditions ensure complete elimination of all pathogens.

All thermal processed materials are chemically modified substances which mandatory must have REACH certification above 1 t/y capacity manufacturing, import and/or placing on the market (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals). Biochar is a chemically modified substance, therefore REACH regulation is mandatory to be applied. ID192 and ID193: Is “slaughterhouse waste” a correct terminology for input material for production of P-rich Bio-Phosphate?

No, this is not. The classified waste and by-product materials are two different streams and technically/legally two different classes.

Waste (or wastes) are unwanted or unusable materials, which is discarded incinerated after primary use.
By-products are valuable resource secondary products derived from the production and manufacturing process.

The outputs of the slaughterhouses are farmed animal products for human consumption and crude animal by-products that are further processed in other industries, such as fat processing and rendering industries to make new and safely derived products. All slaughterhouse crude animal by products (ABPs) must be processed, that is resulting derived products in the rendering industry. Slaughterhouses do not processing animal by-products but deliver such materials to other and specialized industries, specialized for fat processing and rendering operations only at the usual processing condition 133°C on 3 bars under 20 minutes conditions.

The direct (untreated) agricultural use of the crude protein content animal rendering products provides high environmental risk by possible trans and recontamination by human and animal pathogens. Poultry manure biochar itself is rather low nutrient density material with low economical interest for the users, as the extra cost for processing is not reflected in the nutrient density value. The input material poultry manure itself having somewhat increased (1-3% P₂O₅ content) nutrient content versus other types of manure with low content, therefore it is of higher commercial value. Poultry manure biochar is fine grain sized and that powder like material is challenging to further formulate and apply in practice under full industrial conditions. Application dose rates are high, such as >10 t/ha. However, it is to be remarked, that biochar processing also means total sterilization of this material that is a plus environmental safety value for poultry manure biochar case.

Bio-Phosphate itself is an exceptional high P/Ca nutrient dense material such as 35% P₂O₅ content, with proper granulation size and macro porosity with BIO-NPK-C formulation possibility in any configuration. This is highly interesting for the users, as the cost for Bio-Phosphate processing is reflected in the nutrient density value and performance. Application dose rates are low, such as 0.3 t/ha average. The overall BioPhosphate cost is far lower vs. poultry manure biochar or plant based biochar, when all costs and values considered under market competitive industrial production conditions.

ID192: What is the P2O5 content of the Bio-Phosphate product?

Up to 36% P₂O₅ content.

ID192: When will the BioPhosphate and the Struvite products be available on the market?

Concerning the BioPhosphate the TRL9 full industrial production installation is under organization and will be set up in 2021 through 2022. The 3R industrial technology and product commercial applications are already MS Authority permitted, and after inclusion as EU 2019/1009 CMC14 pyroylsis material in 2021 will EU legalised from July 16, 2022 as well. The BioPhosphate product is already organic listed by Organic Farming Certification associations as well. REACH certification is under progress. By the end of next year the BioPhosphate products are planned to be launched on the market, for which Italy and Germany are primarily targeted.

The Stuvite will be launched on the market when the MS legislation will stop to consider it as a waste.

ID192: Why 850 degree Celsius high material core temperature used at ID192 BioPhosphate production? Would it not be sufficient lower treatment temperature, like at plant based biochar 450 Celsius?

Manufacturing of high quality ABC Animal Bone Char - BioPhosphate require much higher technology performance level than to make plant based biochar, as the animal bone materials containing complex protein based organics, while plant materials short chain organics only. The ABC material protein character of the bone is such that it requires 850 Celsius material core processing temperature to remove all volatiles and tars from the material inside, while at plant based biochar the 450 Celsius material core processing temperature is sufficient. During all types of thermal processing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAH's are formed which must be full removed from the material. Although the EU defined PAH16 limit 6 mg/kg in general, but some Member States defined PAH19 limit 1 mg/kg already since 2005, especially when such products are applied in environmentally sensitive areas with connection to subsurface water base. All in order to make a fully safe BioPhosphate product under any conditions, the 3R technology is implementing PAH19 limit <1 mg/kg in all it’s product cases, that quality under industrial production conditions can only be reached with 850Celsius material core temperature processing only.

ID192: Why choose only animal bone as input material for BioPhosphate recovery?

Only animal bones containing large amount of phosphorus and that is because both bones and mined mineral phosphates are apatite minerals. On this Planet Earth the apatite mineral is the only original source of phosphorus.

ID192: Why so exceptional high P2O5 content available in the Bio-Phosphate products?

On the Planet Earth naturally high concentrated Phosphorus can only be found in one unique mineral and that is the apatite, which has two natural forms:

MINED MINERAL APATITE is a mineral phosphate rock that is non-renewable (formed over millions of years) critical raw material and naturally containing high levels of cadmium, uranium and other toxic chemicals. Today the mined phosphate rock is the only significant commercial source of phosphorus used to manufacture chemosynthetic fertiliser. The process to convert the ore into a phosphorus fertiliser product is done via chemical extraction with an acid. Phosphorus fertilisers produced from phosphate rock poses a risk to human health and environment.
BONE BASED-APATITE which is an unexploited and renewable biomass raw material with high dicalcium phosphate content. The food grade cattle bones are pure and free from organic and inorganic contaminations and available in economically interesting industrial scale. The 3R zero emission pyrolysis technology treats the food grade cattle bone grist at as high as 850ºC material core temperatures in absence of oxygen. The end-product is the Bio-Phosphate (animal bone char) which is pure and environmental safe recovered fertiliser product.

As both materials are same apatite group substances the standard high P concentration is >30% - 36% P₂O₅ in both cases. All Phosphate products are critical raw materials as of COM/2020/474 final.

ID192:Why not use bone meal directly as fertilizer?

Despite animal rendering by-products (bone meal/bone grist, MBM, PAP) are sterile products at the point of production, same as for any protein content materials, there is a very high risk for cross and recontamination during the applications. As because animal rendering by-products are mammal protein based, the human and animal pathogens are prime risk potential. While rendered products leave the cooker negative of the bacteria, re-contamination can occur anywhere along the way to the utilisation point. Renderers take many precautions to prevent recontamination while the meal is in their possession but have no control over their product once it leaves a facility. Although, the usual treatment >133°C, 20 minutes, 3 bars thermal treatment, may be enough to sterilize the category 3 bone meal, after the material is leaving the factory the cross and recontamination is a risk. The EU bans the use of animal rendering by-products for livestock animals. Concerning utilisation of crude bone meal for direct fertilisation in-vivo open environment, there is a high risk of cross and recontamination of human and animal pathogens. Therefore, in the case of Phosphorus recovery from any bone products only the added value carbonization processing at material core temperature <850°C providing fully safe solution. Proper carbonisation of bones offering far better technical opportunity for product valorisation versus the highly risky use of the crude bone meal for any in vivo applications.

The Producer Responsibility Principle: Producers having full responsibility for animal by-product disease cross and recontamination cases (“manufacturers of products bear responsibility for the environmental impacts of their products throughout the products life-cycles, including upstream impacts inherent in the selection of materials for the products, impacts from manufacturers, production process itself, and downstream impacts form the use and disposal of the products.

Some of them (ID:192-280-270) are available for organic farming, while ID:397-250-208-210 aren’t available at now, but maybe in the future.

ID: 192, 210, 280, 270: The lettuce has a short cycle. How you explain the compost (slow nutrients release) were better than mineral fertilisers (rapid nutrients release)?

The lettuce is a crop very susceptible to urea burns. And the composts contain microelements, organic matter and microorganisms compared to the the mineral fertilizers which might have supported the plant development.

ID:397, 192, 250, 208, 210, 280, 270: Were the microelements also balanced in the italian demo trials?

No, they were not. These were demonstration trials for farmers and agricultural practitioners. We’ve only balanced the NPK macroelements.

ID:397, 192, 250, 208, 210, 280, 270: Why the mineral fertilization plan produced worse than the other treatments in lettuce.

Because the lettuce is a crop very susceptible to urea burns.

ID:397, 192, 250, 208, 210, 280, 270: Why the urea alone in lettuce is phytotoxic and added with biofertilizers it is not?

Because when we added urea to biofertilizers we added lower content of N just because all the biofertilizers contains N, with the exception of the Ashdec(ID:397). However, in this case, it hasn’t added mineral phosphorous. Ashdec’s P is not soluble in water, while the mineral P it is. The combination of the rapid availability of N and P of the mineral fertilization plan could be more dangerous than the only rapid availability of N.

ID:397, 192, 250, 208, 210, 280, 270: Why you added mineral phosphorous in order to balance P content if they were already P fertilizers?

Some of them (ID:210-280) contain more N than P. So they were balanced starting from N in order to avoid the possibility to apply too N. In case of high P content, like Ashdec, it was not necessary to add any mineral P fertilizer.

ID:397, 192, 250, 208, 210, 280, 270: You considered in some of demo pot trials on lettuce the root development index. In these cases this is a good or a bad parameter.

Often, if the roots stretch excessively, it is believed that they don’t find the right nutritional conditions near the plant collar and that they then go deeper to search for nutrients, which is a bad parameter. However, in this case we considered the overall root development (not only the length) and it was noted that the plants that produced the most biomass were also those with the best root development index. In addition, the fertilizers were mixed thoroughly with the substrate prior to transplanting the lettuce. Therefore a large root development, in our case, means that the fertilizers were distributed correctly and that the plant was able to absorb the nutrients more efficiently.

ID 192 und ID 193: Könnte Fleisch- und Knochenmehl (FKM) ein relevanter Input für Biophosphat als Mischstrom sein?

Nein auf keinen Fall. FKM Mix ist ein ganz anderes Produkt und aufgrund seines sehr hohen Fleischgehalts und niedrigen Knochengehalts nicht geeignet.

Herstellung von Biophosphat aus FKM: absolut nicht, es gibt keinen technischen Grund und keine wirtschaftliche Existenzfähigkeit, Möglichkeit und Rationalität, FKM mit hohem Proteingehalt und niedrigem P-Gehalt in Biophosphat umzuwandeln. FKM kann für Bioenergie rational genutzt werden durch Pyroylese-Verarbeitung.

ID192: Perché i prodotti Bio-Phosphate si distinguono per un contenuto così elevato di P2O5 disponibile?

Sul nostro pianeta il fosforo ad alta concentrazione in natura può essere trovato solo a partire da un minerale chiamato ”apatite”, che ha due forme naturali:

1) APATITE MINERALE ESTRATTA è una roccia minerale fosfatica. Si tratta di una materia prima critica non rinnovabile (formata in milioni di anni) e che contiene naturalmente alti livelli di cadmio, uranio e altre sostanze chimiche tossiche. Oggi la roccia fosfatica estratta è l'unica fonte commerciale significativa di fosforo utilizzata per produrre fertilizzanti chemiosintetici. Il processo per convertire il minerale in un prodotto fertilizzante fosfatico avviene tramite estrazione chimica con un acido. I fertilizzanti fosfatici prodotti dalla roccia fosfatica rappresentano un rischio per la salute umana e per l'ambiente.

2) APATITE DA OSSA. Si tratta di una materia prima da biomassa non sfruttata e rinnovabile con un alto contenuto di fosfato bicalcico. Le ossa dei bovini per uso alimentare sono pure e prive di contaminazioni organiche e inorganiche e risultano disponibili in scala industriale ed economicamente interessante. La tecnologia di pirolisi a emissioni zero 3R tratta ossa bovine di grado alimentare fino a una temperatura interna del materiale di 850ºC in assenza di ossigeno. Il prodotto finale è il biofosfato (biochar di ossa animali) che è un fertilizzante di recupero puro e sicuro per l'ambiente.

Poiché entrambi i materiali sono sostanze dello stesso gruppo di apatite, la concentrazione standard di P è alta ed è > 30% - 36% P2O5 in entrambi i casi. Tutti i prodotti a base di fosfato sono materie prime fondamentali secondo il Regolamento UE (2020) 474.

ID192: Perché produrre il BioFosfato viene utilizzata una temperatura interna del materiale a 850° Celsius? Non sarebbe sufficiente una temperatura di trattamento più bassa, come nel caso del biochar da scarti vegetali (450° Celsius)?

La produzione BioFosfato di alta qualità richiede un livello di tecnologia molto più avanzato rispetto alla produzione di biochar a partire da scarti vegetali. Il trattamento delle ossa prevede un processo a temperatura di lavorazione del nucleo del materiale di 850 gradi Celsius per rimuovere tutti i composti volatili e i catrami che si trovano all’interno del materiale di partenza, mentre per produrre biochar partendo da scarti vegetali la temperatura di lavorazione del nucleo del materiale di 450 gradi Celsius è sufficiente. Durante la lavorazione termica riduttiva si formano degli IPA che devono essere completamente rimossi dal materiale. Sebbene l'UE abbia definito il limite di PAH16 di 6 mg/kg in generale, alcuni Stati membri hanno definito il limite di PAH19 di 1 mg/kg già dal 2005, in particolare qualora i prodotti vengano applicati in aree vulnerabili in riferimento alle falde sotterranee. Tutto ciò è indispensabile al fine di realizzare un BioFosfato completamente sicuro in qualsiasi condizione: la tecnologia 3R, infatti, serve a ridurre il contenuto di PAH19 <1 mg/kg.

ID192: Perché si vuole evitare di utilizzare farina di ossa a contenuto proteico nei mangimi per il bestiame e nei fertilizzanti?

Nonostante i sottoprodotti della filiera animale (farina di ossa/polvere di ossa, MBM, PAP) siano prodotti sterili al momento della loro produzione, come per qualsiasi materiale a contenuto proteico, c'è un rischio molto elevato di ricontaminazione e contaminazione incrociata durante il loro utilizzo. Le dosi di applicazione sono elevate: > 10 t/ha. Tuttavia, è da sottolineare che il trattamento di pirolisi per ottenere il biochar consente una sterilizzazione totale di questo materiale, che è un valore aggiunto per la sicurezza ambientale.

Il biofosfato è un eccezionale materiale ad alta densità di nutrienti P/Ca come il 35% di contenuto di P2O5, con dimensioni di granulazione adeguate e macro porosità con possibilità di formulazione BIO-NPK-C in qualsiasi configurazione. Ciò è molto interessante per gli utilizzatori, poiché il costo della lavorazione del biofosfato viene ampiamente compensato da un incremento di valore dovuto all’aumento della densità dei nutrienti e delle prestazioni. Le dosi di applicazione sono basse: in media di 0,3 t/ha. Il costo complessivo del Biofosfato è di gran lunga inferiore rispetto al biochar da pollina o al biochar vegetale, quando tutti i costi e i valori sono considerati in condizioni di produzione industriale e competitive sul mercato.
