Waste  is  normally  treated  at  specific  facilities  depending  on  the  type  of  waste  managed  (municipal,  industrial, livestock,  etc.),  implying  that  treatment  synergies  among the  diverse typologies  of waste  are  not  availed  of.  To improve this situation, the “Multi-Waste Plant” concept proposes the management and valorization of different types of waste, with very different nature, such as industrial waste (plastics), the non-recyclable fraction of waste treatment centers and farm/livestock waste, in the same facility. A key aspect of this model is the recovery of energy, for which two complementary technologies are proposed: an anaerobic digester to effectively convert biodegradable organic waste into biogas and, additionally, a thermo-chemical treatment system to transform non recyclable waste into syngas. The digestate leaving the  methanogenic reactor is introduced into a crystallization unit and converted to struvite  (magnesium  ammonium  phosphate)  taking  advantage  of  its  nutrient  content.  This  procedure  allows  to recover, jointly, the phosphorus contained in the digestate (an undeniably scarce component) and nitrogen, in the form of a compound with fertilizing properties that can be used in agriculture. The possibility of reusing the liquid fraction generated in the process for local consumption in the facility and in the vicinity area (irrigation of crops, cleaning of farms, etc.) is also a possibility.
